Hi guys and dolls,
The magic of fantasy continues today with the insanely talented Renee Scattergood! Let’s talk to Renee.
Me: Tell us about yourself. Where you’re from, etc.?
R: Originally I’m from America, but I moved to Australia in 2004 to be with my (now) husband. We met online and, after meeting in person, we decided we didn’t want to be apart anymore. We have a daughter who has been diagnosed with ASD and ADHD, so that has been both a challenge and great learning experience. She’s a great kid, but she keeps us on our toes.
Me: What is your most recent project? Tell us a little bit about it.
R: For the last ten months or so I’ve been focusing on my Shadow Stalker serial. It’s about a young woman who is destined, according to some, to enslave her people. It’s a story about how she overcomes being branded with a false destiny and actually saves her people by fulfilling it in an offhanded manner. I write in “episodes”, about the length of long short stories or short novellas, which are published monthly. There are four parts to the story, and each part is made up of six episodes. Currently I’m working on Part 2 and I’ll be releasing Episode 10 at the end of this month. For those who are interested, Episode 1 is permafree and can be downloaded on Smashwords.
Me: Did you choose writing or did writing choose you?
R: I would have to say it has chosen me. I’ve always loved telling stories, even as a kid. Unfortunately, it never occurred to me to write any of them down until I was in college and my English instructor suggested I consider getting some of my work published.
Me: What do you find so appealing about writing fantasy?
R: I love the fact that I can make up my own worlds with my own rules. It’s a genre that really allows my imagination to run wild, and as active as my imagination is, I need that kind of freedom.
Me: What authors make you want to be a better writer?
R: Most recently it has been Lindsay Buroker. She is an indie author who has been quite successful and I have been following her blog and podcast, hoping to learn everything she has done so I can apply it to my own career. I love that she is always willing to experiment and try new things.
Me: Do you have any traditional fantasy tropes that you like to use?
R: No, not any traditional ones, but my basis for magic in my stories tends to stem from shamanism and shamanic practices.
Me: Do you have any weird writing rituals?
R: No, I’m kind of boring that way. I’m a make-a-plan-and-lots-of-lists type person.
Me: What inspires your world building?
R: My very warped and overactive imagination. Seriously, a lot of the stuff I come up with comes from vague memories of dreams I have.
Renee Scattergood lives in Australia with her husband, Nathan, and daughter, Taiya. She has always been a fan of fantasy and was inspired to become a story-teller by George Lucas, but didn’t start considering writing down her stories until she reached her late twenties. Now she enjoys writing fantasy. She is currently publishing her monthly Shadow Stalker series, and she has also published a prequel novella to the series called, Demon Hunt. Aside from writing, she loves reading (Fantasy, of course), watching movies with her family, and doing crafts and science experiments with her daughter. Demon Hunt (A Shadow Stalker Prequel Novella)
Auren longs for adventure and a break from her tedious life on Appolia. It’s the start of summer, and she is looking forward to her yearly camping trip with her foster father, Kado. She believes these trips are for fun, but when they arrive on Luten Isle, Kado informs her that she is a shadow stalker, and she is in training.
One morning, Auren decides to take her training into her own hands. She only means to practice seeing the veil to the shadow world, the world of the shadow people and the source of their power. Instead, she opens the veil releasing a demon, a guardian of the shadow world, into the physical world.
With the deadly beast loose, she and Kado don’t have long to hunt it down and return it to where it belongs, or many innocent people could die.

When Makari can’t get through to her, he decides Drevin, the emperor of the Galvadi, is right. Auren is the delohi-saqu. Now Makari is no longer concerned with cleansing her because the delohi-saqu cannot be cleansed. He resorts to more sadistic methods to extract information about the Coalition. If Auren can’t resist, her friends and hundreds of innocent people will die.
Shadow Stalker: Turning Tides (Episode 9)
Makari has finally come to realize Auren is not the delohi-saqu, and his father, Drevin, Emperor of the Galvadi, has been wrong about her all along. He goes to Zain, Auren’s father, for help to heal Auren’s mind after he had wrongfully broken her. Now Makari vows to protect Auren and help her escape, but she refuses to leave without her father.
Auren and Makari’s love for each other grows, and the connection they share deepens. They have to be careful, however. Spending too much time together is causing the other guides to grow suspicious. Makari’s loyalty is tested, and he is forced to do something he swore he’d never do again.
